Entertainment in the 60's
RADIO
Entertainment in the 1960's came in many forms. Radio was a form of entertainment
along with television and cinema. These forms of entertainment grew in popularity
throughout the decade allowing new occupations to open up as well. This would
include jobs such as theatre acting, and hosting. The growth of these newly
introduced and developed technologies allowed people to find entertainment
easier.
The Radio was a major influenced form of entertainment. It was used more than
the television in the beginning of this decade as it was more affordable than the
television itself. The radio allowed news to get across and was a useful form of
communication. It was also used for commercial uses, and in order to
listen to the latest music artists. The radio was useful for music lovers and
the young people that wanted their music were beginning to demand better
access to the airwaves.
CINEMA
During the middle of the decade, cinema began to decrease as televisions began
to make a major move. However, during the middle of the decade, it regained its
business because of the many cinemas that began to open up in Australia. Having
this also enabled people to have variety in their forms of entertainment. Cinemas
reflected the youth culture at the time in many films. It showed how the young
people began to lose the time to their families and became more orientated
to the baby boomer crowd. The young people were no longer family- orientated
and showed how they were losing traditional value, not only in their fashion,
but also their lifestyle that was depicted through many films. The young people
were now portrayed differently.
Their were also other forms of entertainment that included ballet, opera and
theatre, however,it began to fade towards the end of the decade. A particular
musical known as 'Hair' was introduced in 1969 It portrayed factors such as
drug- use, nudity and new introduced themes such as the 'hippy' theme. This
musical explained the youth of 1960 the best. It showed how the youth had
lost their traditional values, and how they had no more values for their elders.
The 1960's was the mark of the new era. It exposed clearly that the new youth
had lost their conservative social values.
TELEVISION
Technology development throughout the 1960's allowed many Australians to
change their form of entertainment. The major boost of television owning was during
the middle of the decade. It was believed that 90% of families in Australia each
owned a television set.
The introduction of the television brought many programmes into Australia. Their
were a variety that came from overseas, mainly from America and Britain. Despite
the fact that Australia had been influenced by many overseas programmes, we also
had some of our own that also interested many. These were music shows, and they
were also children's programmes, to keep many age groups tuned.
Towards the end of the decade, television development became better.
The development enables Australia television to be broadcasted between
each state in their capital cities and many people in the country were able to
be involved in a lot of the urban entertainment. This was a big move for
Australia because they were able to have easy access to their entertainment.
