FASHION IN THE 60'S
Fashion in the 1960's reflected the attitudes of the newly growing generations. The decade of
the baby boomers growing up, had this new youth demanding their own style of
fashion. The new inventions made by fashion designers were based on an 'new
era'. What had previously been classed into 'formal' and 'casual' wear had
no longer existed, along with the separations between the styles of women
and men. The 1960's was an introduction of the emergence of unisex clothing.
Women were now wearing denim jeans and had short styled hair known to us now as
'boy cuts'.
Modern Fashion
A lot of the modern fashion that was in Australia during the 1960's came from London, and
quickly spread to America and also Europe. A lot of the fashion from
London was influenced from their pop music, art and fashion scenes. Fashion was
based on a new era from the new generations of youth that were growing in
population effected by the baby boomers.
Modern fashion had changed dramatically and completely in the 1960's. The people replaced the
shady dark colours of the 1950's with bright and mild colours. These colours
were reflected through geometric shapes, and the shapes of clothes included
slim fitting.
THE ARISE OF THE MINI SKIRT
The mini skirt was a big part of the 1960's. Skirts and dresses in the past were expected to be
a sensible length that stopped at the knees. However, the new fashion exposed
showed a culture of rebellion that characterised the 1960's. The new movement
of the mini- skirt showed centimetres of the thigh that were completely
unacceptable. However, towards the end of the decade, the style had become
something popular that was widely spread across the new youth. It was believed
that the new 'mini skirt' represented the young people rejecting social
standards and claiming their own fashion sense in a way that would allow people
to see the up root of the new rebellious generation. The appearance of the mini
skirt was a way for the women to expose the new acceptance of the changes they
have made in their fashion.
